Why Use An Onsite Certified Medical Interpreter...

  • Medical Understanding. Interpreters have completed nationally recognized medical interpreting programs. These individuals possess knowledge of medical terminology and comprehension of medical issues that the average person / family member does not. Correctly interpreting medical information is imperative for the health and well-being of a patient, and mistakes could be harmful and dangerous to the patient.
  • Conflict of Interest. Family members often find themselves emotionally stressed when having to convey upsetting medical news to their loved one, and may incorrectly interpret information or become unable to continue interpreting the information.  A Certified Medical Interpreter can relate sensitive information with poise, and unbiased
    impartiality.
  • Discomfort with personal issues. Doctors / Care Providers many times discuss sensitive personal information with their patients, and this is often very uncomfortable and inappropriate for the family members involved.  A Certified Medical Interpreter is the correct medium to relay information between a patient and care provider –
    offering the highest levels of professionalism and discretion.
  • Stress on relationships. Many parents or relatives rely on children or other family members as their interpreters. This can place a strain on relationships, as many children feel the weight of the responsibility for
    interpreting for their parents or family members. Utilizing a Certified Medical Interpreter can ease the burden on family members and avoid these difficult issues.

...Instead of a national phone interpreting service?

  • If the patient has speaking and/or hearing difficulty, an onsite interpreter is far more beneficial.
  • In medical facilities that provide mental health care, it is far better to provide onsite, in-person medical interpreting. Through phone interpreting, body language and facial expression is completely lost, and  mental health patients could easily become agitated or confused with a phone interpreter.
  • When several individuals are in the room, making it very difficult for a phone interpreter to effectively understand the conversation and convey the specific message, it is preferred to have an Onsite Medical Interpreter.
  • In situations where a visual element is used, such as when a medical practitioner must do a physical checkup or must discuss body parts that sustain injury or are causing pain to the patient, and also in Physical Therapy settings, an Onsite Medical Interpreter is essential. In these types of situations, the care provider must have precise, visually-aides for communication with the patient, which must be captivated and relayed accurately by an Onsite Interpreter, not a phone interpreter.
  • When working with children or the elderly, Onsite Medical Interpreters are far more effective. Children’s limited vocabularies make it nearly impossible for over-the-phone interpreters to communicate with them effectively. It is more beneficial to elderly patients with potential hearing and cognitive difficulties to have an Onsite Interpreter.
  • When a patient is traumatized, patients with mental or physical abuse often find it difficult to communicate their problems. An Onsite Medical Interpreter can pick up on the nuances in body language / facial expression that is paramount to be able to interpret correctly.

  • Certified Interpreters have focused medical terminology training and daily experience, and more evolved language skills than a typical bilingual individual. Certified Interpreters have the experience to linguistically connect care providers and patients, leading to high-end professionalism and seamless communication between the doctor and patient. Certified Interpreters understand that cultural customs, norms and nuances are just as important as language master and are adept in addressing these. An untrained bilingual individual will likely make mistakes, which can have dire consequences  potentially resulting in the wrong diagnosis or treatment for the patient. 
  • A Certified Medical Interpreter has higher-than-average concentration, memory, and retention. They have been trained to retain and absorb a lot of information in mere moments, while maintaining focus and accuracy. They also must maintain composure under high-stress conversations. These are difficulties in which an office staff member who may happen to be bilingual, would possibly not be prepared for.
  • Certified Interpreters must maintain ethics, their own industry best practices, knowledge bases and codes of conduct. A bilingual staffer, ignorant of industry standards and norms in interpreting, may break common codes, such as speaking in the first person, engaging the doctor or patient in side conversations for their own clarity, or allowing their job relationship with the office care providers to influence the interpretation, even if it’s not intentional. A Certified Medical Interpreter is trained to do the job: accurately translating the conversation between patient and doctor while keeping up with the pace of speech.
